Understanding Gender Diversity and Working in Solidarity with Transgender People and Communities

Full Day Workshop for Trans Youth Awareness Week

- Participants will develop common and further understandings of terminology and
basic issues surrounding gender diversity from an intersectional lens including an
anticolonialism and antiracism
- Participants will develop awareness of the pervasiveness of
cisnormativity/cisdominance and heteronormativity as invading almost all spaces
- Participants will be able to deconstruct transphobic arguments
- Participants will develop skills to analyze organizational presentation and practices
so as to be trans inclusive; and to create alliances, personal accountabilities
and anti-oppressive actions to build solidarity
- Participants will be able to discuss personal accountabilities and anti-
oppressive actions to build solidarity
- Participants will have a safe and accountable space (“braver spaces”) to further their
learning and clarify understandings of what is and what isn’t transphobic

Morning session:
- Opening ceremony and Indigenous knowledge sharing
- Education - Core terminology and concepts
- Understanding - Building empathy through an understanding of the trans
- Engagement - High level discussion of approaches to promote inclusivity

Lunch Break

Afternoon session:
- Panel discussion: People with lived experiences and knowledge
- Developing organizational and practice skills to be transinclusive
