Becoming a Better Ally

The Guidance Council of the Alberta Teachers' Association Conference 2014
This workshop will present evidence-based strategies to foster inclusive educational and counselling practices for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students in Alberta schools. Strategies to create safe and supportive environments for LGBTQ students, families, and colleagues will be shared. Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore relevant terminology and concepts relating to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression
  • Assess societal beliefs and attitudes relating to sexual orientation and gender diversity
  • Reflect on personal beliefs, attitudes, and feelings that impact inclusive educational practices
  • Discuss current laws and policies affecting LGBTQ students, including Bill 10 and the recently published “Guidelines for Best Practices: Creating Learning Environments that Respect Diverse Sexual Orientations, Gender Identities, and Gender Expressions”
  • Hear reflections and anecdotes from colleagues and students in public, Catholic, and faith-based school districts
  • Learn tools for supportive allyship in schools
  • Share strategies to continue supporting LGBTQ students, families, and colleague
